Wishing for a Pet’s Understanding in English

If you could make your pet understand one thing, what would it be?

I first thought that I wished Bubba could understand how much I love and appreciate him. However, he’s so in touch with my emotions that I am fairly confident he knows. He’s able to anticipate my needs before I can.

My second thought was teaching him the meaning of “Move.” He has a knack for standing in people’s way. I tell people it’s his primary superpower. His secondary superpower is the ability to sleep. However, I’ve come to realize that when he’s standing in my way, he’s trying to divert my attention to something. He does it when he desires petting, when his food dish is empty, or when he wants fresh water. Bubba really likes to stand in my way when I first get home after being gone for a while. This is usually accompanied by a loud meow that’s full of attitude. I know he’s yelling at me for leaving and taking so long to get home. I think standing in someone’s way is his way of showing love.

I think that if I could teach Bubba anything, it would be English. I wish he could speak and understand English better. When I say better, I mean that he has a pretty good understanding of a lot of English. I think my primary goal with this wish is that I could understand him better. I feel like there’s a lot that he has to say and has no one to say it to. I also get the sense that he would have a lot of questions about our current living situation and why things happen the way they do. I wish I could explain all of this to him so that he understood it and hopefully, it would bring him some peace of mind.

    1. He’s learned that he needs to be very persistent with me. Eventually I will pick up on the cues. Thank you for your wonderful comment.

  1. I’ve just been reading about Bubba. You’ve clearly got a wonderful relationship with Bubba. I’m sure he understands more than you think – and I love the illustrations.

    1. Thank you for reading my posts. He’s one of my favorite subjects to write about. I have so much love for him, there aren’t enough words in the language to describe just how I feel. I’m sure he understands more than I give him credit for. I appreciate your kind words, thank you for commenting.

  2. Justin, it is amazing how much we learn from our pets by them simply standing in our way. At times I feel more like they are training us more then us training them. they are thinking things like “those stupid humans, why don’t they understand.” The way they let us know when they are in need of something like food. Their simple justures of getting under our feet. Only wish some days I could sleep that much.

  3. I love how much you love Bubba and take the time to understand him as much as you can. I love that you’ve figured out when he’s standing in your way, it’s because he wants to tell you something or needs something from you. I love the image of you coming home after being away a long while and Bubba “yelling” meow at you to tell you he’s displeased by all the time alone and that he has a tonne of things to tell you now that you’re back. Loving that you included a photo of him xx

      1. Likewise, we continually attempt to communicate with them using our language, but I believe they perceive our intentions more than our words. It’s akin to when someone mentions, “I sense the intention behind your voice.” I may not grasp the exact words, but I understand the essence of what you’re trying to convey type thing.

  4. My hello to Bubba, the photo seems to be talking to me 🙂 It will be great if pets could speak our language so less misunderstanding hopefully. Currently the connection seem amazing my friend.

  5. Oh Lord…I forgot about that one…I don’t know how because “Move” is one word I don’t think my dog will ever understand…either that or he just flat out doesn’t care …lol

  6. Oh I don’t know why, but your post reminded me of a sci-fi novel I’ve read a while ago called “The Prince of Milk”. I’m not sure I can even recall the plot properly (i’m not a huge fan of science-fiction and only read it cos it had been recommended to me by a friend ^^”) but iirc I think there was a talking cat in it, a black one at that.
    Bubba is a lovely kitty!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words about Bubba, and for sharing your memory of ‘The Prince of Milk’! It’s always fascinating how certain posts can stir up memories of books we’ve read, especially when there’s a charming talking cat involved. I haven’t read that novel myself, but it sounds intriguing, especially if it left an impression on you despite not being a huge fan of sci-fi. It’s always great to get book recommendations, so I’ll definitely add it to my reading list. Thanks again for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!

    1. No, I’ve seen the videos of dogs that do that. Seeing a cat do it would be very interesting. I’ll have to search and see if I can find them.
