Addiction is rampant in the US. Probably within the world, but I think it’s worse in the US. I don’t just mean substance abuse addiction, but there are other forms of addiction. Sure, there’s gambling addiction. There’s a lot of things that people can be addicted to other than substances:
- Gambling – The compulsive need to continue gambling despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop.
- Internet – Overuse of the internet to the extent that it interferes with daily life, including compulsive use of social media, online gaming, or browsing.
- Video Games – Excessive and compulsive game playing that interferes with daily life.
- Food – Compulsive eating habits or an obsession with food that can lead to physical and psychological harm.
- Sex – Compulsive engagement in sexual thoughts, urges, or behaviors that affect one’s ability to function normally.
- Shopping – Compulsive shopping or buying, often as an attempt to feel good or to avoid negative feelings.
- Work – Workaholism, or the compulsion to work excessively and to the detriment of one’s health, personal relationships, and social life.
- Exercise – Compulsive exercise, often driven by a desire to avoid negative feelings or to meet unrealistic body image goals.
- Social Media – Excessive use of social media platforms, leading to significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
- Television or Movies – Compulsive watching of TV shows or movies, often as a means of escapism or to avoid dealing with life’s problems.
- Pornography – Compulsive use of pornography to the extent that it interferes with normal daily functioning or personal relationships.
- Collecting – Obsessive collecting of items to the point where it impacts living spaces and financial stability, or interferes with normal social interactions.
We all get dopamine hits from one thing or another. It seems that society places much more condemnation on people who experience a substance addiction. Regardless of how you get your dopamine hit, if it’s interfering with your life there is no difference in what the source of the dopamine hit is.
I think that anyone reading this if they examine their lives from an objective viewpoint can pinpoint one particular source of dopamine for them. Something that they exploit to get that “feel-good” feeling. I’m not here to judge, exactly the opposite. I hope that someone reading this realizes that those who are going through substance addiction are no different than anyone else. We’re all just trying to feel good. There is no single addiction that is better or worse than any other addiction. That’s why it’s important that if someone is trying to treat their addiction they receive support.
I guess I’ve said this all before, but the topic of addiction comes up a lot in my life these days. Anyways, feel free to share your thoughts on addiction in the comments. How has it affected you, and what do you do to ensure that your dopamine hits are in check?

I think Smoking, Drinking, Weeding, Partying, etc are missing. Which I think is more addictive than mentioned..
My blog post was an examination into non-substance addiction.
Thank you for the kind words of encouragement.
