Daily Prompt

Tree Green Utility Van

What is your all time favorite automobile?

This daily prompt is going to age me a bit. I tend to like luxury cars over sports cars. I know I have a lead foot, so sports cars would be a bad idea for me. That may be why I’ve never shown an interest in driving one. I think it would all be downhill from there.

Luxury cars, with their heated leather seats and chrome molding, their smooth rides, and feature-packed cabins call to me. One of the makes of cars that I’ve always liked is Cadillac. Specifically, the CTS. As this model was phased out a few years ago, my taste has evolved to the Buick. I really like the Buick Enclave. It’s much bigger than the Cadillac CTS, but I realized how much more luxurious a large cabin is while I owned my Nissan Murano. I will have to hand it to Nissan, the Muranos are very nice vehicles.

I can definitely see the appeal of car ownership, don’t get me wrong. Those who are car enthusiasts may hate what I’m about to say. But the expense of owning a car, even a nice used vehicle is outrageous. It only makes sense in the US because the country was designed for people who own vehicles. The cities are laid out in a way where you cannot get from a residential area to a commercial area without driving in a vehicle. Sure, you could walk but it can oftentimes be very dangerous.

I’ve thought about this for many years now, and it seems so backward that people are designed to be walking creatures, yet in the US, you cannot walk to most places. I know we have right-of-way pedestrian laws, but I think cities should be built around the person who walks. You should be able to get from any residence to any business easily and safely without having to drive. Driving and vehicles should be an afterthought. They should be reserved for those with disabilities or in times of inclement weather.

I just woke up from a peculiar dream. I won’t go into too much detail, but on this topic, my sister was in my dream and had a house that was green and a matching green utility van. It reminded me that vehicles can be a means of self-expression. My mind doesn’t automatically take me there because customizing a car to be a specific color can be expensive, and that’s only one aspect of customization that can be done. Although, it was really nice seeing this van parked outside of her house, next to all the green trees and plants.

I remember pulling up to the house, and noticing the back doors of the van being open, displaying large speakers in the back. That was a must-have vehicular customization for my sister pre-motherhood. Obviously, her priorities are much different these days. Her boys are in high school, and one is even able to drive right now. I imagine soon enough they’ll be wanting their own automobiles with customizations unique to their own personalities. Imagine if money were no object, the types of cars we would see on the streets? I often think about how every car tends to be a muted color; muted reds, muted blues, muted golds and greys, muted green… they’re all dimly colored. I also imagine that if money were no object for anybody the streets would be full of vibrantly colored and uniquely tapestried vehicles of all sorts of shapes, sizes, and abilities. There’s something to be said about money, though. Once I figure out what that is, I’ll be sure to share it with you.
