Horrible Jobs

Daily writing prompt
List three jobs you’d consider pursuing if money didn’t matter.

I’m not much of a fan of today’s writing prompt. If money didn’t matter? Do they mean to ask, “What crappy-paying job would you like?” None, because typically the ones with crappy pay are also crappy jobs.

Here’s a list of poorly-paid jobs in America that people might be reluctant to take, even if money wasn’t a primary concern, along with the reasons why:

Service Industry

  • Fast food worker: Long hours, low pay, demanding customers, and often physically demanding work.
  • Retail cashier: Dealing with difficult customers, long hours on your feet, and often monotonous work.
  • Call center representative: High-stress environment, dealing with frustrated customers, and often repetitive tasks.
  • Janitor/custodian: Physically demanding work, often involving exposure to unpleasant cleaning agents and bodily fluids.

Healthcare

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA): Physically and emotionally demanding work, low pay, high patient-to-staff ratios, and potential exposure to infectious diseases.
  • Home health aide: Physically demanding work, long hours, low pay, and often working alone with vulnerable clients.

Agriculture

  • Farmworker: Physically demanding work, long hours, exposure to pesticides and other hazardous chemicals, and often low pay.
  • Meatpacking worker: Dangerous work with high risk of injury, physically demanding, and often unpleasant working conditions.

Other

  • Social worker: High caseloads, emotionally demanding work, dealing with difficult situations, and often low pay.
  • Corrections officer: Dangerous work environment, high stress, and exposure to violence.
  • Waste management worker: Physically demanding work, exposure to unpleasant odors and hazardous materials.

Yeah. Screw that. I thought about being a social worker. I thought that would have been an interesting job. I heard about their caseloads though. Yeah, right.

I enjoy my current job. I currently train AI. I work from home. I make pretty decent money for an entry-level position. I just wish there was more variety available in the work that I do.
