Daily Prompt

Enjoyable time

Do you play in your daily life? What says “playtime” to you?

There are three types of ways to spend time. Productive, valuable, and enjoyable. Productive is self-explanatory. It is time spent at work or time spent doing chores. Things in your day-to-day life that you don’t necessarily do because you enjoy them. You may do them to earn an income, or for self-care. Valuable is doing things for a higher purpose. Some examples could include going to church, volunteering, and helping others in any capacity.

Enjoyable activities are the pursuits that bring us personal pleasure and happiness. This category includes hobbies, leisure activities, and recreational pastimes. Whether it’s reading a book, playing a video game, gardening, or simply taking a leisurely walk, these activities are primarily about personal fulfillment and joy. They provide a necessary balance to the productive and valuable aspects of life, offering a respite and a chance to recharge.

Interestingly, the boundaries between productive, valuable, and enjoyable activities are not always distinct. For instance, a hobby like painting or writing could be both enjoyable and valuable, contributing to one’s personal growth and well-being. Similarly, a profession that aligns with one’s passions could be both productive and enjoyable, blurring the lines between work and pleasure. The key is finding a balance that suits one’s life, ensuring that time is allocated in a way that nurtures all aspects of well-being: personal satisfaction, contribution to society, and fulfillment of responsibilities.

What I enjoy doing in my free time changes depending on my mood. However, it typically includes one of a handful of things. At night, before I sleep I really enjoy reading. During the day and evenings, I enjoy playing video games. There are also things that I enjoy that could be considered valuable, like spending time with family and friends. I enjoy spending one-on-one time with my cat, Bubba. That can be any time of the day. He’s the perfect companion.
