What’s your dream job?
When I was a kid, I always wanted to be a veterinarian. I thought it would be rewarding to heal and treat sick animals. However, my mom told me that it was a gross job and that I wouldn’t like it because I don’t like gross things. I have a friend who is a nurse and she said you get de-sensitized to things. But, I decided after hearing my mom’s advice to change my course.
During middle school and high school, I wanted to be a computer programmer. I knew that computers were going to become more and more a part of everyday life and there would be a huge need for computer programmers. However, the thought of sitting at a computer in a cubicle all day made me a bit depressed when I thought about it.
I think a lot of people would choose a job in which they get to travel. I like to travel, but as I get older I enjoy being a homebody more and more. The thought of always being in a different place gives me anxiety now. Sure, I’d like to travel periodically, but I also like being at home. I have my privacy, I know where stuff is when I need it, and I have my friends and family nearby. There’s a lot of comforts that come with being at home. I have really learned to enjoy those.
No, I think if I could choose any job in the world I would either be a pastry critic or a writer. I wrote in a recent blog about where my love of pastries comes from. I think being a pastry critic would combine my love of pastries and my passion for writing. Although, I think I need to eat more pastries so I can better my discernment. I’ve been pretty limited to pastries that come from the area that I live in. It would be really nice to periodically travel the globe trying different pastries and writing about them. Yes, I think that would be my dream job.
I suppose I could start my own blog. Save up money and travel around trying different pastries and baked goods. Although, a friend of mine recently traveled to Canada and Quebec has some wonderful-looking pastries there. I wouldn’t be allowed into Canada, I have a DUI. I could always have the pastries shipped to me, but I don’t think they’d be as fresh then.
You know, I hadn’t planned on going to Canada but just knowing that I’m not allowed there because I have a DUI is really ticking me off. I live in Wisconsin. I’m not saying that drinking and driving is okay, but I know more people with DUIs than without. That doesn’t make it okay, but that seems like a pretty strict rule to put up for travelers. At least from a Wisconsinite’s perspective.
Oh well, maybe I don’t want to go to Canada and try their pastries. There are plenty of pastries in other parts of the world. I bet Europe has really good pastries. My favorite is cream cheese danishes. There’s a bakery around where I live that makes really good danishes and kringles. I should try to figure out where that bakery is and try to get some fresh danishes. I think that will be my short-term goal.

No problem! Let me know if it pans out!
A pastry critic sounds like an incredible dream job!! I think pastries in Paris probably far surpass Canada anyway!
Paris would be an amazing city to travel to and dine on pastries! Good idea, thank you.
I lived in Seattle and New York for some time and they both have incredible pastries!
Pastry critic sounds like a great job! Germany, France, and Croatia all have interesting (in a good way) pastries, so make sure you follow through with that trip to Europe.
Thanks for the tip! I’ll be sure to add those to my list.
What’s the tl;dr?
I’d like to be a pastry critic.
Thank-you. I really like the first paragraph just feeling tired right now to read it all. I might give it a full read later. Thanks for posting such a good piece of writing… I think
I sooo relate to you liking being at home, Justin. I’m a homebody too and I can’t think of anywhere better in the world to be than safe at home – with a nice cup of tea and a pastry! Yum.
That sounds delightful!
I read it all now. Very enjoyable thank-you
Pastry critic does sound like a yummy dream job. Could definitely write about how different cultures make them. Also, that’s unfortunate about the DUI. However, living in Buffalo and Canada right next door, I hear advertisements of Attorney who helped people with DUI be able to visit Canada.
Interesting to know! I’ll keep that in mind for when I travel there, thank you for the tip!
