A cozy watercolor painting of a living room decorated for Christmas, featuring a Christmas tree with ornaments and lights, a glowing fireplace with stockings, a plush sofa with holiday cushions, and wrapped gifts under the tree. The scene is warm and inviting, with soft brushstrokes and a snowy window view in the background.

Bad Apples & Macrame

Daily writing prompt
Are you a good judge of character?

No. Not one bit. Horrible at it. Ask the people who care about me. My most recent ex-boyfriend is the perfect example of that. What a mess of a relationship that was. And what a mess it left my life.

Is being a good judge of character something that one can develop?

Don’t get me wrong, I can spot a sleazeball from a mile away. It’s those people who pretend to be good people to your face and turn around and demonstrate otherwise. My ex was a lot like that. I also think that I’m too trusting, so some of the fault is on me. It sucks though, living in a world where you have to be cautious about everybody you meet. Sure, maybe it’s just a few rotten apples, but trust me… that means the whole bunch is questionable. At least until you investigate the apple further.

I mean, continuing that metaphor, wouldn’t it be nice if you could just bite into any ol’ apple you find? You can’t. You have to check it for bruises and other signs of decay, pests, chemicals, etc.

Oh, that’s like red flags, I know I see them I just don’t register that that is what I’m seeing. Everything is 20/20 in hindsight, right?

Anyway, if you didn’t read yesterday’s post, my family celebrated Christmas last night. It went pretty well. My younger nephew brought his girlfriend and she must not have known to bring a white elephant gift, so we were short a gift. Oops.

The food was good! We had tacos. We also played LCR (Left, Center, Right). My family plays with and calls it “quarters.” It’s a fun game but it’s purely based on luck, doesn’t really take any skill. Everybody starts with three chips (or quarters in my family’s case). There are three dice. They each have a couple of circles, a star, and “left” and “right” printed on them. You shake the number of dice corresponding to how many quarters you have (up to three dice). For each circle you get, you keep your quarter. If you get a star, you move a quarter to the jackpot/pool. If you get “left” or “right” you move the quarter to the left or right. The goal is whomever is the last one with a quarter wins, and with my family they win the cash. I joked around that we should open up several tables and have multiple sessions going simultaneously. LOL

The gift I brought was a vintage (probably from the 1960s or ’70s) macrame set. My nephew Marcos ended up going home with it, I think. The gift I ended up bringing home is a Charles Dickens 1,000 piece puzzle. I only read the box briefly, but I guess it has characters from his books in the image of the puzzle. So, after you’re done putting it together, it functions as a seek-and-find.

Take care.
