Simple Satisfaction

What’s your favorite thing to cook?

I don’t really cook. I’ve tried before, but it comes out pretty bad when I do. Recently, I tried cooking hamburgers. They were frozen patties, which I think was my first mistake. But they came out frozen in the middle and cooked on the outside. Even if I don’t make a blunder like that, I usually end up undercooking or overcooking whatever I’m making. I hate cooking.

So, if I had to pick something that is my favorite thing to cook, it would be something simple like Hamburger Helper. I’ve made a lot of that and it rarely gets botched. Another thing that I enjoy making that is fairly easy is tacos. I mean the American-style tacos, where you brown some ground beef, add a seasoning packet and add whatever sides you want to your softshell flour tortilla. I know how to make those well enough.

It would be cool if I knew how to make Mexican-style tacos. I think they cook up some steak and heat up the corn tortillas. I’m sure they’re pretty simple but the meat part scares me. I know how to brown ground beef and how to cook chicken breast, but that’s about it. I bet chorizo is pretty much like ground beef, but I recently saw someone posting on Reddit a picture of chorizo asking if it was cooked properly, so maybe it isn’t as easy as it looks.

Speaking of chicken breast, I did make some one night many years ago. I think they were lemon pepper chicken breasts, with some frozen vegetables and garlic-roasted red potatoes. It was a pretty good meal and I didn’t get sick from it. However, it was a lot of work, especially for one person to eat and I think I had leftovers for several days which kind of killed the excitement. Cooking for yourself is not exciting in my experience.

Anyways, as you can probably guess, when I live alone I primarily eat box meals. Whether they be Hamburger Helper or frozen microwaveable meals. My doctors hate it because the high sodium levels increase my already high blood pressure. I thought about doing those mail-order meals but they’re so expensive and still require some skill at cooking. I’m sure they’re much healthier though. Maybe some day I’ll take a course in cooking and it will help me but for now, I’m satisfied with simple.

  1. Get a pan to a screaming hot temp, at the same time, turn the oven up to 425 – 430. Drop some butter in the pan, take a steak heavily seasoned with salt and pepper, sear it for about 3 minutes per side, put it on a tray and toss it in the oven for about 9 minutes. Take it out, let it rest for 5 minutes. Plate your beautiful medium rare steak and enjoy with your choice of side and a cocktail. Can’t miss.
