Bubba the Cat: A Tale of Unexpected Friendship and Feline Empathy

What is your favorite animal?

My favorite animal? I’ve always been partial to sheep. I’ve always admired that they produce wool which can be made into warm sweaters. I think that’s a really cool quality. I suppose llamas do that as well, but sheep look really peaceful in images. Like a painting of a grassy field with a few sheep grazing is very relaxing to look at. They’re pretty calm and quiet creatures, I think I find that appealing because my mind is always so chaotic.

As an adolescent, I got a lot of slack for liking sheep. You know, lonely farmers and such… My mind never goes there until someone brings it up. I sometimes wonder if I should have chosen a different favorite animal, but then I remind myself that I am who I am and I like what I like.

I’ve always considered myself a dog person. I find that they’re easy to understand and bond with. They’re not overly complicated, whereas cats have a very complex communication system. They’re complicated. Most dogs, you can approach and let them sniff your hand and they’ll let you pet them. They’re excited to see you and want to share company with you. However, cats require a little more delicacy. They have to be the ones to approach you. At least until they get to know you.

My current pet is a cat. He came with my ex. When my ex moved in, he brought Bubba with him. I didn’t want to have pets, and I certainly wasn’t considering a cat. There was another cat that came with as well. I left both cats pretty much alone for a long time. It wasn’t until my ex pointed that Bubba was following me everywhere, waiting for me at the door when I would come home, sleeping next to me on the bed when I would nap… that I realized I had a buddy.

Bubba chose me as his human. Since then, I’ve considered myself a cat person. As companions, they share many traits with dogs. They’re loyal, very social, caring, empathetic, intelligent, and my favorite, cuddly! They just take some patience when you first meet them. Bubba doesn’t understand personal boundaries when it comes to people he likes, but if you don’t respect his he’ll dart away. He’s never been the type to get aggressive, so no one has to worry about that. He is, however, very particular about whomever wants to pet him has to have clean hands. He’ll even brush me aside sometimes if I need to wash my hands.

He follows me everywhere. Doors give him a lot of anxiety, especially when they separate the two of us. I always know I’m going to get bitched at when I get home if I’ve been gone too long. Too long is about 15 minutes or so. A loud distinctive meow is in store for me. Then, I must appease with some petting and love, after a hand-sniffing of course.

He and I certainly have our routines. He knows mine, and I know his. That, I think, was one of the most beautiful things about getting to him. Once we got our routines synced up, it felt like a perfect fit. He knows what I’m doing when I’m doing it, and I know his next moves as well. Another beautiful quality Bubba has is his capacity for empathy, with humans and other animals. Whenever I’m in a mood, whether it’s upset, angry, sad, or depressed, he’s by my side and begging for attention. That’s his way of pulling me out of my mood. He’s very sensitive to such things.

He likes most adults. Children, he’s unsure of. But everyone that meets him agrees, he’s a good cat. He’s well behaved (except for the recent spraying). He’s also very interested in being a part of whatever is going on. Like my ex used to say, “He just wants to be ‘one of the guys.'” When someone is doing something, and they have a task to complete, he’ll be right by their side to help them. He doesn’t have thumbs, so most of his help comes in the non-physical form. He’s a cheerleader, someone who’s there for you and encouraging of your endeavors, whatever they may be.

Needless to say, since he’s come into my life I have taken on a dual-role as a cat person. I still love dogs, but Bubba is where my heart is. I could spend all day writing about him. This isn’t the first post I’ve written about him, and probably won’t be the last. In short, Bubba is my favorite animal.

I have to tend to the needs of the day, but I might be back to post again today. We’ll see how the day goes.

Take care.
